The Birmingham Amateur Radio Club celebrates its 82nd birthday this year!
The first organizational meetings were conducted at the home of Mac Godwin, W4ADL. During the middle-twenties, there were perhaps only 25-30 hams in the greater-Birmingham area. Many of these were involved in the formation of the Birmingham Club on the night of February 12, 1926, which was signed by Pop Ansley.
| Meeting sites have varied over the years and included individual residences, Birmingham Southern University, the #5 Fire Station, the Red Cross Building, Herzing College, Zamora Temple and currently at the Hoover Community Education Center. No matter where the Club conducted its meetings, public service to the community and emergency communications were guiding principles that endure today. |
During World War II, all Amateur Radio activities were suspended and the Club no longer functioned as such. However, there were seventeen members who maintained operating privileges under the War Emergency Service and were issued special callsigns. The calls used at that time were WKAV with Units numbered 1 through 17. Net activity was conducted on 2 ½ Meters using one-tube receivers and transmitters. Each of the seventeen was issued Black Out and Special Passes as part of the Civil Defense System.
| After the war, the Club returned to service and continued active in Net operations on 2 ½ and 5 Meters, later changing to 2, 6, 10 and 75 Meters. Civil Defense, Red Cross and various Public Service activities of the day included The March of Dimes, Arlington Home Fund Telethon, Army Pick-Up Days, Cerebral Palsey and Muscular Distrophy Telethons and many more. |
